Northern Voice 2008 is over.  It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot.  In fact I was inspired to start this blog because of my experience.  But now that the conference is over, I think I should start to think about what direction I want to go with my blog.  I don’t want it to just be about my life in general, its not the reason I started to blog.

Since most of my spare time is spent on geeky things, its unavoidable that the things I write about will also be geeky.

I was a little disappointed that the Net Neutrality discussion didn’t happen, but there was some talk of having this discussion later in the week.  This is good news for those of us lucky enough to live in Vancouver.

All in all it was a good end.

I missed the keynote!!

February 23, 2008

Its just my luck I suppose.  I woke up extra early today so that I would make it here with time to spare.  Unfortunately, I didn’t memorize the route I took to get to this building yesterday, so I got completely turned around on my way. UBC is a big campus, and it’s easy to get lost it seems.

Even though I missed they keynote, I certainly haven’t missed the conference, there are going to be a lot of interesting things to do and see today.  The most interesting for me is the discussion on Net Neutrality taking place after lunch.

Well, the keynote just ended and people are pouring into the atrium, so I am going to put the laptop away and explore a little bit!

I had a great day today at the Northern Voice 2008 internet boot camp. It was an exceptionally informative day, and I met lots of great people! I even started my own blog, albeit an one lost in obscurity, at least for now.

I was going to go out and have fun with a few people I met last night at the opening party. Sadly I wont be able to, because this morning I awoke to find my desktop computer will not boot, it appears that my motherboard is not receiving any power. So either the motherboard died, or my power supply bit it. Because my desktop computer is the only computer I own, I really have to fix it or I am disconnected from the world.

As I write this my room mate and I are trying to bring it back, but so far we aren’t having much luck. Due to the strange circumstances of how this problem came to be, my room mate blames a nameless ghost, as there is no reason really, why it shouldn’t be working.

<sigh> It looks like I might be up late again.

Live blogging 101

February 22, 2008

Live blogging 101

Here I am at the Live Blogging 101 discussion at Northern Voices 2008. This discussion is lead by Jeffrey Keefer (silenceandvoice.com) and Robin Yap (blog.robinyap.com). I actually met these two at the opening party last night. It was Jeffrey who was nice enough to say hi to me, I imagine it was because I was sitting alone at the back of the room having a beer and staring back at a room full of people I didn’t know. I really was feeling out of place, and he helped me feel a little more at ease.

Anyway, this live blogging stuff seems really cool, unlike normal blogging where you take the time to think out what you write, live blogging is a bit more spontaneous, which I guess is implied by “live” part in the title.

Unfortunately it took me so long to get this set up that I wasn’t able to blog the discussion. But fear not guys, I was listening!

It was a great discussion, very informative and for someone like me its another step towards having a half-decent blog.

Blog tag!

February 22, 2008

Blog tag! No, its not a game… there’s no prize at the end or anything. Its just a good way to add meta information to blog posts, images, video’s and what have you.

Hmm, I keep hearing about del.icio.us but I’ve never really used it. I’ve always been a big fan of Digg.com for finding new interesting stuff to check out online. I suppose that because I’ve decided to get into blogging, that I should take advantage of every tool that makes things easier and more efficient.

Well, having run out of ideas for now, I’ll start paying full attention to the discussion. I’ll have more to post later!

A lot about nothing

February 22, 2008

So far this blog isn’t really about anything, but then again its only a few hours old. My biggest passion happens to be gaming, and what goes on in the video game industry. So expect to see a lot of posts about game news, game reviews, or other general gaming nonsense. Its not just going to be about games, but I don’t know what its really going to be yet.

Right now most of what I post will be focused on the Northern Voice 2008 conference, as you may have noticed if your browsing this blog.

If you happen to see this, and are feeling somewhat generous, please, please, PLEASE let people know about my blog! I promise I’ll return the favor… somehow.

Social Networking 101

February 22, 2008

So when the last discussion ended, I was sort of boxed into my seat and couldn’t get out of the room without displacing quite a few people. I guess thats my fault for picking a seat in the middle of the row.

Lucky for me the discussion that just started is perfect for me, its about how to drive traffic, or promote your blog. Definitely something I need to do because no one knows my blog yet. In fact I am fairly certain that not a single person has even seen this site yet. Which I suppose is good, because it looks like crap right now. Too bad I can’t get a Kickstart for my blog.

HaH! This discussion was just totally sideswiped by the mention of “I Can Has Cheezburger?” and “lolcats”. Everyone loves a good lolcat, and who knew they can help drive traffic! Awesome!

Managed to get a question in, which is good because the information I got was awesome. Information i’ll be able to use to try and promote my new little corner of the interwebz. Hopefully I can use that info successfully.

Well the discussion is over, and I have to get outta this chair.
